Gulfstream Horsemen’s Summary Notes March 21, 2013

Thursday, March 21, 2013

Racing Dates

  • As reported last week, there is still no resolution or significant progress in talks between Calder and Gulfstream. Regarding the possibility of running Mondays and Tuesdays from April through June, there is still no definite decision from the State of Florida.

Summer Meet

  • Currently there are over 2000 stalls applied for at GP. Gulfstream realizes that there is significant duplication of stall applications at Calder and Gulfstream, as well as at some of the northern tracks, to a lesser extent.
  • Work is to begin very shortly on the $1 million drainage system designed to handle excess water on the track surfaces. The work will not interfere with training in the morning.
  • Solar-powered lights will be added to the “Trackus” poles to provide better visibility on the track when training early.
  • Two-year-olds will be allowed on the grounds April 1.

General

  • The Miss Racing Queen Pageant Finals will be on Sunday at 6 pm in “Sport of Kings.” There will be 5 finalists from California, and 5 finalists from Florida.  All are welcome to attend.
  • The After Care Stallion Stakes will be run on the final day of the regular meet, April 5. Eligible horses for this 7 1/2 furlong race on the dirt are those who were sired by the stallions for whom a breeding season was donated at the auction prior to the Eclipse Awards.
  • Trainers expressed concerns that the Turf Course is too hard where the cones are placed for “Works.” For the rest of the meet, the cones will be placed closer to the rail than they have been, and it’s hoped this will alleviate the problem.
