Joan Rose Needell was elected to the FHBPA Board in 2013. She is a member of the Benevolence Committee of Florida Horsemen’s Charitable Foundation.
Needell’s father, Harold Rose, was a lifetime owner and trainer. He was her mentor in the thoroughbred industry.
Needell’s favorite horses were Hal’s Hope and Joanie’s Catch. Her favorite moment in racing was seeing Hal’s Hope win the Florida Derby in 2000.
Needell joined the FHBPA Board to try to help the people on the backside.
Needell was born in Newark, N.J. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Miami and her master’s degree in Social Work from Barry University. Needell is a former teacher and social worker. She is involved with several charities. She has three children, Lori, Diana, and Steve and eight grandchildren. She resides in Pinecrest, Fla.
